KEY POINTS:
For the second year running, the Herald on Sunday's Michael Brown is the New Zealand Soccer Writer of the Year.
Brown, who claimed the New Zealand Soccer Writer of the Year title in 2005, won again with a portfolio that included a scoop about the All Whites gaining a fixture against Brazil and New Zealand Soccer's desire for the Knights to drop the controversial 'New Zealand' tag from their name. The judge said Brown's entry had a strong news element and good use of colour in his writing.
Brown edged out Hamish Bidwell from Hawke's Bay Today and Fred Woodcock from the Dominion Post. Andrew Cornaga, from Photosport, won the New Zealand Soccer Photographer of the Year title.
In the same awards, Blackburn Rovers and All Whites defender Ryan Nelsen won the International Player of the Year - like Brown, for the second year in a row.
Cornaga, whose pictures are often published in the Herald on Sunday, also won at the annual Sir Terry McLean Sports Journalism Awards, as did the Herald on Sunday's Dylan Cleaver (Best Sports News Writer) and Paul Lewis (Best Sports Feature Writer and Best Sports Columnist).
The Herald on Sunday sports section also won the Qantas Media Awards' Best Section title - the best of any section in all newspapers in New Zealand.
