CARSON, California (AP) Los Angeles' Kofi Opare scored his first MLS goal to give the Galaxy a 1-0 home win over Montreal on Thursday which moved the California club up to third in the Western Conference, two points off the lead with two games to play.
Opare spun and chipped the ball into the net from a scramble in the Montreal box following a corner in the 68th minute.
The two-time defending MLS Cup champions can clinch a playoff berth with a win or draw on Sunday against San Jose.
Montreal, which is fourth in the East, suffered its third successive 1-0 defeat and had its winless streak hit six games.
