Football: 'Worst tackle of the year' sparks mass brawl in Argentina

Argentinian footballer Lucas Torres has attempted one of the worst tackles in football history, sparking a brutal punch-up during the Lujan Football League Final.

Representing Social Atletico Television, Torres was airborne as he dived in for a feet-first tackle during the closing seconds of a match against La Union de Jaguel.

Torres missed the ball completely and dangerously knocked over an opposition player, who flipped forward and landed face-first in the pitch.

Lujan were trailing 4-1 when the criminal tackle took place. ESPN described it as the "worst tackle of the year," and it's hard to disagree.

A brawl inevitably erupted when Torres got back to his feet, with players and substitutes wildly swinging fists. Two footballers were filmed kicking each other during the mayhem.

The match immediately came to a close and players retired to the changing rooms, where further verbals were exchanged.

Incredibly, this wasn't Torres' first major offence in a professional football match — in 2016, he was handed a 24-day suspension after assaulting a referee while representing Argentinian club Lugano.

Torres shoved the helpless referee in the face after he was shown a red card, and had to be restrained by four men to prevent him causing further harm.

Police escorted the rattled referee off the field after the final whistle.
