The World Cup dream is over for New Zealand linesman Paul Smith but not before having the chance to work with Italian Pierluigi Collina, arguably the world's best referee.
One of 36 assistant referees (linesmen) at the cup, Smith last night learned that he would not be required for the remaining matches despite what he felt had been a good run in the three matches he officiated in.
"Sure, I'm a little disappointed but at the same time I have to be realistic," said 45-year-old Smith who has reached Fifa's compulsory retirement age. "I have gone out after a huge game involving the host country [Japan against Turkey] and Pierluigi Collina the world's best referee."
With Italy now out of the Cup, Collina is expected to control the final.
"I wouldn't have swapped the experience of being here for everything," said Smith, who returns home today. "Now I'll be able to watch the rest of the World Cup from the comfort of my own home."
