Fritz Walter, who captained West Germany to their first cup success in 1954, died yesterday, aged 81.
Walter led Germany to a 3-2 win over star-studded Hungary in the final in Switzerland, the first time a German side took part after World War II.
"He was the embodiment of the impeccable and fair sportsman," said the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder.
Walter retired in 1959, having played 61 internationals, scoring 33 goals.
