IBARAKI - Steve Staunton's team-mates gave the Ireland captain two presents yesterday he will never forget - a last-gasp draw against mighty Germany and a watch to mark his 100th cap.
"It's been a great day. The lads have been fantastic," Staunton said after Ireland lived up to their never-say-die reputation and equalised through a Robbie Keane goal with just seconds of injury time left.
Staunton, who took the captain's armband when Roy Keane was sent home after a row with manager Mick McCarthy, said the draw was no less than Ireland deserved.
Cheered on by about 10,000 fanatical supporters, Ireland celebrated as though they had lifted the World Cup itself, instead of merely taking an important step to the second round.
Ireland drew their opening match against Cameroon and fancy their chances in their final first-round game against Saudi Arabia, who were thrashed 8-0 by Germany.
Staunton became the first Ireland player to win 100 caps, but he insisted the occasion had not gone to his head.
