Canterbury United football coach Keith Braithwaite is resigned to losing his star midfielder.
All Whites' squad member Aaron Clapham did not get any game time at the World Cup in South Africa, but Braithwaite has no doubt the New Zealand Football Championship player of the season is on the cusp of a professional deal.
"Obviously Aaron's got to look after himself now. He's searching for a professional contract, he's heading off to Australia in the next 10 days or so to have trials with the Newcastle Jets and hopefully for his sake, if it all works out well, he'll become a professional footballer."
Clapham's New Zealand teammate Jeremy Brockie will play for the Newcastle Jets this season.
