Buried in a story about David Beckham getting mobbed by shoppers in Manchester last week was the sort of admission from the England captain that left you wondering, "What the hell was he thinking?".
Beckham told how he was being driven from England's training ground when he became the target of a kidnapping plot by his England teammate Rio Ferdinand, who is making a programme called Rio Ferdinand's World Cup Wind-Ups.
Becks went on to say that he was getting a bit annoyed with his driver's route selection so jumped out of the moving vehicle and hailed a black cab instead.
Lucky he didn't break his foot. If he had, Sven-Goran Eriksson would have wrung his neck - and throttled Ferdinand - as well. Isn't Rooney's right foot stressful enough?
