Football World Cup: Socceroos defender Trent Sainsbury receives European contract offer after 33 minutes against France

Thirty-three minutes was all Socceroo defender Trent Sainsbury needed to impress at the FIFA World Cup.

Despite losing their World Cup opener to France, several Australian players left a good impression in Russia including Sainsbury who has already received multiple offers for his services from several interested clubs.

Having barely kicked off their World Cup campaign, Sainsbury's agent started getting phone calls with interest in the Aussie centre back, with one call coming during the Socceroos' 2-1 defeat to France.

The 26-year-old is currently signed for Jiangsu Suning in the Chinese Super League but now looks destined to move to a European club after his defensive performance against the former World Cup champions.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sainsbury's agent Tony Rallis received preliminary offers from two English clubs and three others elsewhere in Europe, one of which came in the 33rd minute of the match.

"I've never experienced it before and I've done 26 transfers overseas," Rallis told the Sydney-based newspaper.

France struggled to break down the Australian defence for long periods of the contest, with their attacking talents Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe nullified by the sturdy Socceroos.

Sainsbury in particular impressed with several timely interceptions and tackles throughout the match, including a crucial block of French midfielder Paul Pogba's through ball that would've sent Griezmann clear on goal.

However, Rallis says formal discussions about Sainsbury's future will have to wait until after the World Cup.

"We've made a decision to leave it until after the World Cup. Trent is very focused on the national team," Rallis said.

Australia will hope to bounce back from their first-game defeat at the World Cup against Denmark on Thursday.
