West Ham needed a shootout to beat 10-man Everton 9-8 on penalties in a thrilling FA Cup third round replay this morning (NZT).
West Ham's Spanish goalkeeper Adrian scored the winning penalty at Upton Park, with the match deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 following extra time.
Enner Valencia put West Ham in front with an angled shot in the 51st minute and Everton's night got worse five minutes later when Aiden McGeady was dismissed for a second yellow card. But Kevin Mirallas leveled in the 82nd minute, curling a superb free kick around the West Ham wall, and then turned provider in the 97th when he teed up Romelu Lukaku for an easy finish.
Carlton Cole equalized for the hosts in the 113th, sending the match to penalties.
