Revered one minute, reviled the next.
French international Mathieu Valbuena was so loved by his Marseille football club that his No. 28 shirt was retired when he departed for Russian club Dinamo Moscow.
But when Valbuena returned to France after just one season and signed for Marseille's rivals Lyon, all hell broke loose.
When Lyon played their Ligue 1 match at Marseille this week, the home fans hung an effigy of their former hero in the stands.
He was greeted by a banner stating: 'True Marseillais only play for OM, you are nothing but a traitor.' The Independent reported that he was booed and jeered, and "Marseille players handed him some rough treatment".
