The biggest ever upset at the Under-20 World Cup or the best day in Fijian football history?
Whatever way you want to describe it, Fiji's 3-0 win over Honduras in Christchurch today gave the tournament an indelible moment that will linger long after the trophy is eventually claimed.
The result was scarcely believable based on the two teams' opening games in group F, when Honduras beat Uzbekistan 4-3 and Fiji were hammered 8-1 by Germany. Considering six of those goals came before the break, the gulf in quality between the tournament minnows and the rest of the field seemed insurmountable.
That all changed, though, when Iosefo Verevou took advantage of a defensive error to put Fiji in front after 14 minutes. The island nation were never about to sit back to protect their lead and, five minutes later, Saula Waqa's acrobatic finish doubled his side's advantage.
By the time Kevin Alvarez diverted a headed pull-back into his own net just before halftime, Fiji were on the verge of the island nation's first win at a Fifa tournament. Victory was sealed after surviving a couple of second-half scares and, incredibly, Fiji are now an outside chance to reach the last 16.
