Young Matildas goalkeeper Brianna Davey has overcome an early New Zealand blitz to help Australia earn a 1-0 victory in their international soccer friendly in Canberra.
New Zealand's Football Ferns had the lion's share of first-half chances on Thursday night, with striker Sarah Gregorius delivering two brilliant early crosses.
However, the Matildas' 18-year-old keeper managed to get the faintest of touches on the first cross to deny the Kiwis, and then backed up again minutes later to defuse a sharp volley from attacking midfielder Amber Hearn.
Davey then pulled off a third massive save, this time a one-on-one in the 25th minute, when a slip at the back of the Matildas' defensive line put Gregorius into open space.
"A little bit stressful, but that's what you take as a keeper,'' Davey said.
