The Football Ferns recorded their first win of their Algarve Cup campaign on Tuesday morning (NZ time) with a 1-0 victory over hosts Portugal in Albufeira.
After a scoreless first half, in which the New Zealand side had a goal ruled out for a foul as the ball crossed the line, the Football Ferns scored the winner in the 69th minute as Annalie Longo lobbed the ball over the Portugal goalkeeper at the back post.
The result, combined with Russia's 3-0 defeat by Brazil, sees the Football Ferns finish second in Group B and Tony Readings' side will complete their Algarve Cup campaign on Thursday morning (NZ time) with a playoff match against the second-placed side in Group A - set to be determined later this morning.
The Football Ferns had the ball over the line 20 minutes into the contest from Anna Green's wide free kick but the goal was chalked off for a foul by Amber Hearn on the Portugal goalkeeper.
Ria Percival proved the New Zealand side's most potent threat in the first half hour, the fullback delivering several telling crosses into the Portugal penalty area but each of them went unrewarded as the hosts scrambled clear. Fellow fullback Green's set piece delivery was also causing issues for the hosts with a succession of in-swinging corners and free kicks making life difficult for the Portugal rear guard.
