Football: English Premier League transfer window spending passes one billion pound mark

Spending in one EPL transfer window has surpassed £1 billion for the first time.

The summer window officially opened on July 2nd and will close on September 1st (NZT).

Last year's window saw a new record set with £859m spent by Premier League clubs, but with a new broadcasting deal due to kick in this window has smashed that record.

Arsenal's signing of 24-year-old centre back Shkodran Mustafi for £35 million was the move that took Premier League spending for this window over the £1billion mark.

Big spenders in the transfer window have been Manchester United and new manager Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United signed Paul Pogba to a five-year contract with a transfer fee of £89.3 million, surpassing the record held by Gareth Bale when he signed with Real Madrid for £85.1 million.
