England Women head coach Phil Neville has called for Instagram to "take action" to regulate abuse after Chelsea captain Karen Carney was subjected to rape and death threats during her side's 1-0 victory over Fiorentina in the last 16 of the Women's Champions League on Wednesday night.
The username dzo09 sent Carney, 31, messages reading: "How many chances you need to score in second half stupid b*****s", "I wish you cancer and leukemia" and "I hope someone will rape you to death".
Carney, who scored Chelsea's crucial penalty on the night, posted the comments with the caption, "Wow some people...." [sic] to her Instagram story at 1am on Thursday morning.
Neville then shared a screengrab of Carney's post with the caption: "A message sent to one of my @lionesses players last night absolutely disgraceful- @instagram are you going to do something about it!!!!!" [sic]
The Telegraph understands the FA has offered its full support to Carney.
