Former All White Jarrod Smith plans to lead Birkenhead United to Chatham Cup glory this season, but needs his hamstrings to follow the script.
The 29-year-old striker has had a professional career ruined by injuries. In the past 14 years Smith has had 20 hamstring tears, a fractured hip, a shattered big toe and most recently a ruptured Achilles.
But after taking a year off, he is back to his goalscoring best and could be a key man if Birkenhead are to overcome Central in a third round Chatham Cup tie at Shepherds Park tomorrow.
Smith, who has played 12 times for the All Whites, is never far away from the score sheet or the physio table.
After scoring seven goals in his last seven games, Smith is under an injury cloud and rates his chances of taking the field tomorrow as "touch and go" after feeling a recurrence of that troublesome hamstring.
