Former All White Jarrod Smith plans to lead Birkenhead United to Chatham Cup glory this season, but needs his hamstrings to follow the script.
The 29-year old striker has had a professional career ruined by injuries. In the last 14 years, Smith has had 20 hamstring tears (including one while playing for Seattle in the MLS where he ripped it off the bone), a fractured hip, a shattered big toe and most recently a ruptured achilles.
But after taking a year off, he is back to his goal scoring best and could be a key man if Birkenhead are to overcome Central in a tasty third round Chatham Cup tie at Sheperds Park on Sunday.
Smith, who has played 12 times for the All Whites, is never far away from the score sheet or the physio-table and this season is no different.
After scoring seven goals in his last seven games, Smith is under an injury cloud and rates his chances of taking the field on Sunday as 'touch and go' after feeling a re-occurrence of that troublesome hamstring.
