Former Phoenix midfielder Albert Riera is making a shock comeback.
The Spaniard, who surprised the Wellington-based A-League football club by terminating the final year of his contract in May, has come out of retirement and will line up for Auckland City in this season's 2016-2017 Stirling Sports premiership.
It's a homecoming of sorts for the 32-year-old, who played three seasons with the Sandringham club, including two Fifa Club World Cup campaigns in 2011 and 2012, but still an interesting turn of events.
Riera was one of the most respected players in the A-League, and made an instant impact in Wellington.
He soon become one of the first names on coach Ernie Merrick's team sheet and was the Phoenix player of the year in the 2013-2014 season, even though he missed the final third of the campaign with a serious groin injury.
