Australian A-League side Sydney FC have offered a contract to former Manchester United and England striker Teddy Sheringham. Sheringham, who will be 41 next month, is out of favour with premier league club West Ham United and has been offered a one-season contract with the option of a second year, according to Sydney's Daily Telegraph.
Rovers win in the rain
Two second-half penalties tucked away by Benni McCarthy gave Blackburn Rovers a 2-1 victory at Bolton Wanderers in a rainswept English premier league match yesterday. The win pushed Rovers into 10th spot and boosted their chances of claiming a Uefa Cup place next season. Defeat dented fifth-placed Bolton's hopes of gatecrashing the top four.
Rangers bag 2-0 victory
Rangers earned a 2-0 win at Hibernian yesterday thanks to a double from Charlie Adam in their Scottish premier league match. But second-placed Rangers still trail leaders Celtic by 19 points.
Real Madrid slip
Real Madrid lost ground in the Spanish Primera Liga title race when they could only draw 1-1 at home with local rivals Getafe yesterday. The visitors dominated early on and took the lead with a well-taken goal from Daniel Guiza in the 38th minute, but they held the lead only until just before the break when Ruud van Nistelrooy scored from the penalty spot. Real remain in fourth place with 44 points, but slipped two behind third-placed Valencia who beat Celta Vigo 1-0 at home on Saturday. Sevilla are the new leaders with 50 points after coming from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 at home.
Scolari misses Brazil
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari wants to stay in Europe in the near future, but admits he'd like to return to Brazil to command the five-time world champions again. "I want to remain in Europe for at least another three years, but I don't discard working for a Brazilian team or even the national team," Scolari told O Globo newspaper. The Brazilian coach led his nation to the 2002 World Cup title in South Korea and Japan.
