Much of the pre-match attention had focused on the behaviour of both sets of fans, who were under the microscope following offensive chanting from Hammers supporters in the corresponding fixture last season and Tottenham's insistence that their followers should stop using the word ``Yid'' in their songs.
Yid is a term for Jew that is often considered derogatory, but some Spurs fans chant the word, or refer to themselves as ``Yiddos'' or the ``Yid Army'', as an act of defiance towards those who taunt them over their Jewish fan base.
Spurs fans were quick to ignore their club's plea, chanting ``We'll sing what we want'' before breaking into a defiant chorus of ``Yid Army''.
Initially it seemed the subdued fare on the pitch would be overshadowed by the chanting.
West Ham kept Andre Villas-Boas's team at bay until Gylfi Sigurdsson's speculative effort brought Jussi Jaaskelainen into action for the first time.
Defoe should have put Spurs ahead less than a minute into the second half, but Jaaskelainen was quickly off his line to block his tame shot.
Allardyce's sidesnatched the lead in the 66th minute when Reid's header from Stewart Downing's corner bounced back to him off Nolan and the centre-back slammed the ball past Lloris from close-range.
Spurs looked shell-shocked and it got even worse for the hosts six minutes later when Noble's astute pass allowed Vaz Te a clear run on goal.

To cap a memorable afternoon for West Ham, they added a third goal in the 79th minute when former Manchester United midfielder Morrison ran from inside his own half, nut-megging Michael Dawson en route, before clipping his shot over the exposed Lloris to trigger a mass exit from the stunned home fans.
Elsewhere substitutes Eden Hazard and Willian scored inside two second-half minutes to steer Chelsea to a 3-1 victory at Norwich.
Oscar was the first of the three Chelsea midfielders to find the net at Carrow Road in the 4th minute.
After Anthony Pilkington headed Norwich level in the 68th, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho brought on Hazard and Willian off the bench.
Chelsea's lead was restored in the 85th after Norwich conceded possession from its corner and the visitors launched a blistering counterattack. After Alex Tetty failed to clear the ball, Hazard took advantage and unleashed a shot that squirmed under goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Willian was on target in the 86th on his Premier League debut with a curling strike into the top corner.
The victory keeps Chelsea in the top four with 14 points from seven games.
In today's later game West Bromwich Albion ended Arsenal's streak of eight straight away wins by holding the leaders to a 1-1 draw at home.
Arsenal couldn't match the fluidity it displayed in its 2-0 dismantling of Napoli in the Champions League midweek, and West Brom took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Claudio Yacob's header in the 42nd.
Arsenal improved in the second half after Tomas Rosicky came on as a substitute, and he helped set up Jack Wilshere for the equalizer in the 63rd as the England midfielder fired in a shot from outside the area.
The point was enough to keep Arsenal atop the Premier League table, although it is now level with Liverpool on points and goal difference.
