SYDNEY (AP) Captain Alessandro Del Piero limped from the field with a calf injury as his Sydney FC team was crushed 4-0 by Brisbane in the second round of the A-League on Saturday.
Sydney made its strongest start to a season in four years when it beat Newcastle 2-0 in last weekend's opening round with Del Piero scoring their first goal and laying on their second. But the former Italy star left the field in the 32nd minute at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and is in doubt for Sydney's derby clash next week with the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Brisbane was unimpeded by the loss of striker Besart Berisha to a hamstring injury after 25 minutes, stunning Sydney with goals to Matt Smith, Jade North and substitute Henrique in the last eight minutes of the first half.
Thomas Broich added the fourth goal 10 minutes from fulltime as Brisbane, which beat Wellington in their opening match, moved to the top of the league.
Sydney coach Frank Farina said Del Piero was in serious doubt for the third-round match against the Wanderers, though he would have to undergo scans before the full extent of his injury was known. Del Piero left with the score still 0-0 but Sydney collapsed on his departure.
