SAO PAULO (AP) Brazil's sports tribunal has suspended former Vasco da Gama playmaker Carlos Alberto for one year after he failed a doping test.
Carlos Alberto will be able to play again in about nine months' time as he has already served a temporary suspension and because there were procedural delays in the trial.
The 28-year-old midfielder tested positive for a banned diuretic and a banned type of hormone after a Vasco da Gama match in the Rio de Janeiro championship in March.
The player's lawyers told local media Thursday that they may appeal the sentencing, which they called "exaggerated."
Carlos Alberto, who previously played for FC Porto and Werder Bremen, was released by Vasco and is without a club.
