BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) Brazil Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo, the government official in charge of preparations for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, says he will likely leave his post in December.
A member of the Brazilian Communist Party, Rebelo is expected to run for Sao Paulo state governor next year.
Rebelo's departure should occur just as Brazil attempts to complete construction of its World Cup stadiums. FIFA says all 12 venues must be completed by the end of the year, six months before the tournament begins.
The minister told local media on Wednesday that he will "be completing a cycle with the delivery of the six remaining World Cup stadiums."
Rebelo became sports minister late in 2011 after Orlando Silva left amid allegations of misuse of public funds.
