SYDNEY (AP) Lucas Neill says he has "no idea" whether he will continue as Australia captain under new coach Ange Postecoglou and realizes he is on trial for a place at next year's World Cup.
The 35-year-old Japan-based defender has been criticized for his performances in Australia's back-to-back 6-0 losses to France and Brazil. His defense of sacked coach Holger Osieck also drew criticism from former teammates.
In camp with the Australian squad ahead of next week's friendly against Costa Rica, Neill said he could only be judged on his performances.
He said Wednesday "right now, like everybody, I'm on trial hoping to be part of the 23 that goes to Brazil. I have a chance now to impress the new manager and hopefully my natural leadership qualities will come through."
