VALENCIENNES, France (AP) Ariel Jacobs has been hired as coach of struggling French club Valenciennes.
The 60-year-old Jacobs replaces Daniel Sanchez, who was recently fired after a poor start to the season. Valenciennes is in last place and has won only one game in nine matches so far.
Jacobs signed a two-year contract, with the option for another year, the club said on its website Monday.
The Belgian won two league titles as coach of Anderlecht and guided FC Copenhagen to the Danish title last season. But he was sacked by Copenhagen in August after the team failed to win any of its opening five games.
His first game in charge is away to mid-table Rennes on Saturday.
