New Zealand must beat Bahrain or Saudi Arabia over a two-leg play-off in order to progress to the soccer's World Cup for the first time since 1982.
While the All Whites Confederations Cup campaign was effectively ended by host South Africa's 2-0 win in Rustenburg today, New Zealand management learned they would face either Bahrain or Saudi Arabia in a home and away series in October-November to secure the final qualifying spot through Fifa's Asian confederation.
Bahrain's 1-0 victory over Uzbekistan ensured they will meet the Saudis over two legs in September.
Bahrain finished third in group one behind Australia and Japan, who had already qualified for South Africa 2010.
Saudi Arabia secured third place in group two after they drew 0-0 with South Africa-bound North Korea in Riyadh.
South Korea topped the group.
New Zealand will play the first leg of their play-off away on October 10 and then host their Middle Eastern opponent on November 14.
Bahrain, one of the most improved sides in Asia in recent times, have never qualified for the World Cup finals but came close four years ago.
They won the Asian play-off against Uzbekistan before being beaten by Trinidad and Tobago in an inter-confederation playoff.
They are currently ranked 70th on the world. Saudi Arabia in 56th; New Zealand 82.
