The All Whites' World Cup build-up is off to a rocky start with the cancellation of the second game on a proposed two-match Asian tour early next month.
In a further blow, top goalkeeper Glen Moss has copped a four-match World Cup ban from Fifa.
For security reasons - aligned to upcoming legislative elections rather than the problems in Pakistan - the Indonesian Football Association has cancelled the April 1 fixture, which had been scheduled to be played in Jakarta.
The first match of the whistle-stop tour, against Thailand in Bangkok on March 28, will go ahead as planned.
New Zealand Football chief executive Michael Glading is desperately seeking a replacement fixture.
There have been suggestions a game in Singapore or perhaps a second game in Thailand might be found.
Coach Ricki Herbert is hoping a second fixture can be confirmed in the next day or so as he sees these matches as an important starting point in what promises to be a busy, and hopefully successful, year culminating in World Cup qualifiers in October/November.
Losing Moss, after he was sent off by Vanuatu referee Lencie Fred for dissent after defender James Pritchett had been hacked down in the 2-0 loss to Fiji in a World Cup/Confederations Cup qualifier in November, is something Herbert could do without.
Moss will have to stand down for the Oceania/Asia play-offs later this year and, should the All Whites qualify, the first two matches at next year's World Cup in South Africa.
"We thought that as the game in Fiji was a qualifying game for both tournaments, Glen would be out of the Confederations Cup," said Herbert. "But Fifa have ruled differently and said he must miss four World Cup games."
Under that ruling, if New Zealand does not win through to the World Cup finals, Moss would have two matches hanging over him until the 2014 World Cup campaign.
Herbert is also without injured Wellington Phoenix duo Ben Sigmund and Leo Bertos for the Asian trip as both recover from recent surgery.
Of the players who went to Fiji, only Moss, David Mulligan, Jeremy Christie, Jeremy Brockie, Kris Bright (used as a substitute) and Aaron Scott (who did not play and has yet to make his All Whites debut) are included in the squad for this month's tour.
Herbert can, however, welcome back experienced campaigners led by Ryan Nelsen, Simon Elliott, Kris Bouckenooghe, Duncan Oughton, Chris Killen and Shane Smeltz.
