Football: Former All Whites coach Anthony Hudson signs Kip Colvey in MLS

Former All Whites coach Anthony Hudson has snaffled the signature of New Zealand international defender Kip Colvey at the Colorado Rapids.

The Major League Soccer club confirmed 23-year-old Colvey was leaving rivals the San Jose Earthquakes after being picked by Hudson with the third overall pick of the league's waiver draft.

Fullback specialist Colvey, who has played 15 internationals, had been released by San Jose after two years at the club which featured loan stints at second- tier outfits Sacramento FC and Reno FC.

He only made four MLS appearances.

Hudson has added Colvey to the Rapids' supplemental roster, for players ranked 21st to 24th who don't count on the salary budget.

Hawaii-born Colvey made his All Whites debut under Hudson midway through 2016 and was a regular selection, mostly at left back.

He played 90 minutes at right back on both legs of the World Cup intercontinental play-off against Peru in November, which New Zealand lost 2-0.

Hudson subsequently ended his four-year stint as All Whites coach to take up the Colorado post.

Colvey was the second Kiwi to bag a MLS contract on Thursday (NZT), with 20-year-old striker Myer Bevan having signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
