On the northeastern end of Waiheke is Hooks Bay and jutting out from the southern end of the bay is a reef that comes up four metres and drops off to 14 metres.
Best conditions are on an incoming tide and northerly wind at dusk.
Anchor out in 14-18m of water up-wind and fish back.
Use a berley trail with wobberly pot a metre off the bottom and mix bait with pilchards and leftover bait.
Cast a strayline rig back to the reef and let it sink down the face. Use a 7/0 beak hook with a small sinker attached.
