Four kilometres north-east of the Noises is a group of rocks and pins with steep drop-offs and rugged foul called the Ahaahas. These rocks have been home to some of the largest snapper taken in the Hauraki Gulf over many years. There are lots of good spots to fish in this area and it's well worth taking time to explore the many pins and drop-offs with your sounder.
A favourite is a pin that comes up 9m on the northern side. The ideal conditions to fish this is at dusk on an incoming tide and a north-easterly wind.
The key to this area is to have the stern of the boat facing square to the structure so that your baits float down the berley trail. Fish with a strayline rig using 10kg tackle, 30lb trace and 7/0 hooks.
Next week's spot: Kauri Point.
