The Northern side of the Whangamata Estuary on the Coromandel Peninsula is known as Te Karaka Point.
To get there by car, travel about 8km north on the main road from Whangamata, take a right hand turn into Whitipirorua road, then 2km down, turn right again into Peninsula road. Drive south about 6km to the end of the road. Park and walk to the point, then north up the coastline to the next point and fish facing Nor East.
Moderate fitness and agility will be needed as this spot requires you to fish from a bouldery and sometimes slippery platform. Suspend a sack containing a berley bomb on the water's edge, the wave action will create an excellent berley trail. You will need to cast 60m-70m over the foul, strayline into the moderate current with 10kg tackle, 1 metre of 50lb trace and a 6/0 hook with just enough weight to take the bait to the bottom.
