If you look closely at your local chart of Rangitoto Island, to the northeast of the lighthouse you will note an area on the shore marked 'Salt Springs' and directly off the shore line 'Spoil Ground'. This is the area known as 'Whites' and it is very easily identified from the sea by an area of dead Pohutakawas on the shore line.
As it is an old dumping ground for the channel dredging, it has a fairly rough bottom that holds seaweed, horse mussels and the like.
Snapper fishing is best around now but I have caught fish here all year. A number of kingfish are feeding on the bait fish in the area so it is worth putting a live bait out under a balloon.
Fishing: Salt springs eternal
