Bumper Point
This is an all-year-round spot for snapper, situated just off Ahikopua Point on the southwestern corner of Great Mercury Island.
It is easily accessible by boat from the popular holiday spots that litter the Whitianga coastline.
Known as Bumper Point it can have a strong tidal flow and works best when the tide is running.
Use a long 2-3 metre trace on a running rig with a 7/0 hook and just enough weight to get the rig down to the sandy bottom.
A wobbly pot of berley suspended just above the sea floor will increase your chances.
The ideal conditions at this time of year would be in the evening with a very light northerly wind and an incoming tide.
This spot can also produce some large kingfish and trevally.
Next week's spot: Surfcasting Hamer.
