The most eastern point of Waiheke Island is known as Kauri Point, there are a lot of submerged and exposed rocks around the headland and great care needs to be taken when fishing close into the shore.
The northern side of Kauri point is by far the best and can only be fished on the incoming tide with a northerly or nor-westerly wind.
Use pillies for ground bait and cast a pattern of baits from along the shore into the open water.
It's also worth floating a messy bait back to the reef structure for the large moochers.
Use a strayline rig on 10kg tackle, 30lb trace and 10/0 hooks with a small sinker if necessary.
