New Zealander Andrew Scott is unlikely to make the World Equestrian Games in September after his main horse suffered an unusual injury last week.
Scott, of Feilding, was named in the New Zealand preliminary team for the games last month, and was almost a certainty to make the final cut.
He said his horse, Clifton Mitavite Say What, had bowed his hind tendon, an injury with a recovery period of at least three months.
The injury happened last Thursday. Scott took the horse to Massey University the next day for a scan which discovered the problem.
"We were sulking all weekend," he said. "Massey said it was very unusual to do a hind tendon, and I've never heard of it before either. It must have been overflexed in some way."
Scott said he would concentrate on his other horse, Mitavite William Tell, during the recovery period but the horse was nearing the end of his career.
