Budding Hamish Carters, Bevan Dochertys and Samantha Warriners go to the line at Maraetai Beach tomorrow.
Around 300 multisport athletes from the Auckland region - including hoped-for entries from Northland and Waikato - will chase gold in the Auckland Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships.
Standouts Rebecca Spence and Kate Mitchell (Rangitoto College) and St Kentigern College fifth-former Matt Burgess are expected to make bold bids and underline their prospects of selection in the New Zealand team for September's World Junior Duathlon Championships in Australia.
There will be real interest in Curtayne twins William and Andrew (St Kentigern College), who are bound for the World Junior Triathlon Championships, also in September, and should be near their best form tomorrow.
Races, over run/cycle/run courses, will be held for juniors (under-14), intermediates (under-16) and seniors (under-19), starting at 11am.
Basketball
Westlake Boys High continue to dominate, as two big wins in just four days have kept them comfortably at the top of the table.
With Corey Webster (37 points), Rory Fannon (18), Thomas Abercrombie (15 and 10 rebounds) and David Clarke (15, eight rebounds and nine assists) leading the way they beat Dilworth 118-46.
They followed on Monday with a 119-49 romp against Rangitoto College, with Abercrombie (25) and Tony Wallburton (22) leading the charge. The clash with Avondale College looms on June 17.
Cross country
William Curtayne showed he is in good shape for tomorrow's duathlon in holding off a determined Aaron Jackson (Kelston Boys High) to win the senior Auckland Secondary Schools Grand Prix championship over 6km at St Kentigern College.
Curtayne recorded a smart 20m 32s over the testing course, with Jackson 6s back and 6s ahead of third-placed Biruk Belachew (Mt Roskill Grammar).
Curtayne led St Kentigern to victory in the three-man team race, from Rangitoto College and Takapuna Grammar.
Local knowledge also helped St Kentigern to victory in the six-man team race, ahead of King's College and Takapuna.
Renee Kraakman also used home course experience to win the senior girl's race by 9s from Gracie Keown (Auckland Girls) and Rangitoto's Kirsten Montgomery.
A strong all-round showing by Diocesan won them both team titles.
Other winners on a day of close racing were Ester Keown (Auckland Girls Grammar) and Matthew Peacock (St Kentigern) in the year nine races over 3km and, in the junior races over 4km, Annie Keown (Auckland Girls Grammar) who completed a sisterly double, and Scott Buswel (Rangitoto).
The Grand Prix was used as a lead-in to the National Secondary Schools Championships in Wanganui on June 18.
The Auckland Secondary Schools Championships will be held at St Kentigern in September.
Curling
Defending Auckland schools champions Long Bay College held on to beat North Island and New Zealand champions Kelston Boys High in the clash of the day at Avondale's Paradice Rink.
Now without their gun player Anthony Brown, Long Bay dominated the early ends with singles to lead 4-0. The fifth end was blanked and Kelston grabbed two on the sixth before Long Bay hit back with another single on the last to win 5-2.
Novice teams Massey Strikers and Rangitoto Ice Cutters fought to 4-4, while, in another close battle, Kelston Girls High and Epsom Girls Grammar were locked 4-4 after five ends. A single and a two on the last two ends got Epsom home 7-4.
Tomorrow night, last year's champion Baradene team will play Westlake Girls High who will look to their skip and international Charmaine Pearson-White to lead them home.
In other action, Corelli High meet Massey Frosties and Long Bay's juniors will play the Birkenhead Giants.
Also tomorrow night, in the first game of the Auckland under-21 competition, Brown will lead a team against former Rangitoto players skipped by Karl Gilmore.
Cycling
The conditions along Auckland's waterfront on Sunday morning hampered the time trial teams in the third race of this year's series.
The strong, gusty winds played havoc and forced many teams to drop riders.
Despite this, the Westlake Boys High juniors managed a respectable 25m 03s to beat Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern.
St Cuthbert's were too strong in the junior girls, heading Diocesan by 10s, with St Kentigern next across the line.
St Kentigern, who have 17 teams in the various grades, scored a convincing win over St Peters College in the senior boys' race, puncturing Auckland Grammar's hopes.
In the senior girls, Diocesan continued their dominance, finishing well ahead of Epsom Girls and St Cuthbert's, who were only 1s apart.
The next round is on June 12.
Golf
The shocking conditions at Muriwai were reflected in the scoring at the Auckland Secondary Schools Strokeplay Championship on Monday.
Almost 100 students went head-to-head in the testing conditions. Orewa College's James Brownlee fired a creditable 78 to return the best gross, two shots ahead of Dylan Field (St Kentigern). Two strokes further back, Sam Isherwood (Takapuna) took third.
The best net was decided on a countback, with Scott McAlpine (Kristin) edging out Andrew Grant (St Kentigern) and Simon Brownlee (Orewa). All carded a net 80.
Natasha Krishna (St Kentigern) also had a two-shot victory with her round of 81. She headed Rangitoto's Mi Kyung Kim with Jane Lee (Westlake Girls) five shots back third.
The net was won by Alexandra Crook (Howick College), her 83 one shot better than Romana Lee (Massey High). Jenny Park (Rosehill) was a further stroke back.
Rugby
The Auckland Grammar juggernaut continues to charge along. In making it four from four with their 46-0 win over near neighbours St Peters, Grammar maintained their record of not having their line crossed this season.
With Mt Albert Grammar's surprise 23-19 loss to Sacred Heart, only Auckland Grammar, Kelston and King's - who drew 11-11 first-up - remain unbeaten.
King's went close to losing that record when they were held 11-10 by Tamaki College. No such worries for Kelston, who raced to a 76-0 win over Macleans College.
