A full-strength Mt Albert Grammar soccer team completed their Auckland senior A1 season in style with a 4-1 away win over traditional rivals Auckland Grammar.
With the championship secure, the interest was in the battle for the AHI Challenge Trophy, which had been at Auckland Grammar for a couple of years. The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when Mt Albert's Damien Fonoti forced the ball home.
A determined Auckland Grammar got themselves back into the game with a brilliant free-kick from Jacob Matthews.
With Josh Smith and captain Joe Simpkins taking control of the midfield, Mt Albert got on top. In a 20-minute spell, five goals were scored, but two were disallowed.
Smith slotted a penalty to put his team ahead 2-1 and substitute Geoff Strickland scored from close range.
Fonoti's twin brother Andrew completed the scoring 10 minutes from time when he broke from halfway and ran through a tiring Auckland Grammar defence.
"It was another very good game," Mt Albert coach Kevin Fallon said yesterday from the national secondary schools tournament in Napier. "But it won't get any easier as we now have to defend the AHI Challenge Trophy in our last game here."
Fallon's words proved prophetic after his side were beaten 1-0 by New Plymouth Boys High in their last pool match. They go through to today's quarter-finals - unlike Auckland Grammar, who were beaten 1-0 by Wellington College and were eliminated.
Kings finished their senior A1 season with a 6-1 home win over Rangitoto College. Charles Baker scored two and Ryan Woolly, John Niyonsaba, Jonathan O'Rourke and Jonathan Rea one each in the victory which assured Kings of third place.
A key held-over game in the Auckland competition between bottom sides Kelston Boys and Liston College will be played on Saturday. Kelston are doomed to senior A2 next year, but Liston need a point to edge St Peters and avoid a promotion-relegation clash with second-placed A2 side St Kentigern.
Those playoff matches will be played in May next year, a fortnight before the start of the new season.
Basketball
Last year's runners-up Westlake Boys have the chance to go one better in next week's premier final against Auckland Grammar after their one-sided semifinal romp over Rangitoto.
In winning 126-41, Westlake booked themselves a repeat of the 2002 final in which they beat Grammar by five points.
Led by strong games from Tony Wallbutton (18 points, eight rebounds) and David Clarke (18 points, four assists), and with solid support from Warrick Siddall and Caleb Johns, Westlake were always in control.
Auckland Grammar were just as dominant in their 103-78 win over Kelston Boys.
Led by 27 points from Tom Storey and with strong games from Won-Sub Cho and Craig Levinson, Auckland Grammar kept alive their hopes of a first title since 1987.
Newcomers Rosehill College upset Manurewa High 71-47 to earn a shot at the girls' title for the first time. They meet defending champions Avondale College on Friday week.
Rosehill hit the floor running with solid defence and accurate shooting, and never allowed Manurewa into the game.
Captain Kim Barnes led by example with 24 points and was the leading defensive rebounder.
She was well supported by Charmagne Compay with 23 points.
Avondale got home 75-46 in the other semifinal.
Cycling
A strong ride on the return leg from St Heliers to Mechanics Bay earned Auckland Grammar sweet revenge over season-long rivals St Kentigern in the finale of the Waterfront time trials.
St Kentigern, who won the Sunday morning winter series, were 2s down on Auckland Grammar at the turn, but could not lift over the final 8km and were 10s adrift at the finish.
The win was some consolation for the Auckland Grammar team, who had held the new James Faulding Memorial Trophy for the fastest time during the series from the first race until being undone in the second-to-last by St Kentigern.
Diocesan confirmed their standing as top senior girls team with a narrow, but deserved, win in the Kingsford Cup.
Epsom Girls Grammar challenged all the way but were 15s back at the finish. Macleans were third.
In winning the Merv Harland Shield, the St Cuthberts junior girls emerged as the only record-breaking team of the 80 on Sunday morning.
They held out the ever-improving Diocesan by 10s. Epsom were third.
In perhaps the ride of the day, the Westlake junior boys were only 3s slower than their senior team in holding off strong challenges from Auckland Grammar and Macleans.
Sam Bewley presented the end-of-season trophies. He was a member of the national pursuit team who won the gold medal at the world junior track championships in Austria.
Rugby
Two Randall Kamea tries played a vital role in King's hard-earned 19-10 win over Westlake Boys in the final of the northern region championship.
The win in a match between the North Harbour and Auckland champions was a qualifier for the national top-four play-off.
Ahead 9-0 at halftime after ace goalkicker Dean Cummins had booted three penalties, Kings then scored two unconverted tries in the second half.
Playing with the wind, Westlake kept in touch for a time with a try from Brock Mustard, which was converted by Michael Harris, who also kicked a penalty.
King's now face Christchurch Boys High in the national final after beating Wesley College 16-14 in yesterday's top-four play-offs.
Hockey
King's College needed a penalty shootout to beat Westlake Boys after a pulsating boys' inter-city final.
Michael Cannon gave Westlake the early lead, but King's hit back with goals from Hitesh Patel and Simon Child.
They held the lead until two minutes from time, when Joseph Bartholomew grabbed the equaliser.
King's goalie Devon Manchester made three crucial saves as his side won the shootout 5-3 to claim their second trophy of the season, following victory in the Auckland championship.
The girls' final also went to strokes after St Cuthberts and Westlake Girls ended 1-1.
St Cuthberts won 5-4 on strokes.
Netball
Led by Samoan under-21 international Catherine Latu, Massey High pulled off a surprisingly comfortable 46-18 win over Cambridge High in the big game on the second day of the premier tournament at Mt Maunganui's harbourside netball centre yesterday.
Coached by former internationals Tracey Fear and Leana de Bruin, Cambridge were favoured to win pool C and now face a tough battle to reach the semifinals.
In a key game in pool D today, Mt Albert Grammar, coached by former Silver Fern and successful national under-21 coach Te Aroha Keenan, face their biggest test against Te Awamutu College.
They finished fourth last year.
Defending A grade champions Auckland Girls Grammar, coached by former Silver Fern and English international Jo Morrison, are on course for a repeat win, but face a big test in their pool A clash with Rangitoto College tomorrow.
Auckland Girls will be looking to under-21 international defender Katrina Grant to help them through.
In another big game tomorrow, last year's runners-up Hillcrest High meet the improving Kristin School team coached by Tania Dalton.
