Geraldine High all-rounder Kieran Fowler displayed his skills with a four-medal haul at the two-day national secondary schools championships at Ericsson Stadium.
Fowler won the senior discus with a 55.93m throw, then backed that with victory in the 110m hurdles, pipping Robert Musgrave (Riccarton High School) in 14.62s. He also collected silver in the long jump and shot put.
In the long jump he was headed by Daniel Natusch (Wanganui Collegiate), who leapt a huge 7.61m in a wind-assisted effort. Natusch marked the first day's competition with a record-breaking 14.92m victory in the triple jump, adding 50cm to the previous record.
Jonathan Macfarlane (Macleans College) was also in record-breaking form, heaving the 5kg shot 17.56m to grab gold.
Mt Albert Grammar's Te Rina Keenan picked up the junior girls' throws double, with a record-breaking 42.6m throw in the discus backed by victory in the shot put.
Too much wind ruled out Nneke Okpala's record-breaking effort in the senior girls' triple jump. The Diocesan pupil leapt 12.60m.
Shafat Salad (Fairfield College) took victory in the 2000m steeplechase but just missed the record.
Nelson College's Dallas Bowden won the tough junior 800m-1500m double by wide margins, carving 2s off the record over the shorter distance with his 1m 53.19s effort.
Ethan Stewart (Howick College) took the junior boys' sprint double with times of 11.61s and 23.11s.
More than 1500 athletes competed at the championships, which included four road races as well as the full track and field programme. It also had events for athletes with disabilities.
BOWLS
Olivia Davids confirmed her standing as a star up-and-coming lawn bowler when she retained her national secondary schools singles crown at Pakuranga yesterday.
The 17-year-old from Christchurch Girls High outclassed Keitha Heta (James Cook High) 16-6 in the final to retain her title after earlier beating Mecaela Lynch (Southland Girls High) 11-7 in the semifinals.
In the other semifinal, Heta had a comfortable 15-9 win over Dorothy Lolesio (McAuley High).
"I'm really pleased I managed to defend my title," said Davids.
"I wasn't too sure I'd be able to do after this morning's effort.
"I came so close to losing my semifinal against Mecaela but I managed it in the end somehow, so I'm pretty happy."
She will be back on the green today representing New Zealand in the junior transtasman test.
Andrew Kelly (Pukeuri) scored a 14-10 win over Te Aroha College's Callum John in the boys' final.
The two pairs finals were won 10-8.
Amy Brenton and Misty Arnold (Nayland College) edged Rangitoto College's Emma von Veh and Louise Russell to take their final, but another Auckland pairing, Adam Wishnoski and Tony Curic (Lynfield College), dashed Nayland College's hopes of a double triumph with their win in the boys' final.
CRICKET
The weather ruined the Gillette Cup finals at Palmerston North's Fitzherbert Park, with rain washing out both first-day pool matches and the final.
With the final called off, the trophy was jointly awarded to Christchurch Boys High and Tauranga Boys College, who won victories in the only matches to be played out.
The highest score of the tournament was the 62 scored by Howick College's Chris Bond.
That was more than half his team's tally of 120 as they vainly chased Tauranga's 225-8.
With Adam Peacock providing the foundation, Tauranga overcame the loss of an early wicket as Peacock (58) and Kane Williamson (60) produced a handy 103-run partnership. Greg Moran, with 3-39, was the best of the Howick bowlers.
Steven Rae bagged 4-25 with some accurate bowling that made life difficult for the Howick batsmen.
Rathkeale College managed only 149 runs after being sent in. Henry Nuttall, who also took 4-25, was the best of the CBHS bowlers.
The bowlers were well supported by wicketkeeper Andrew Horrell, who took five catches.
In the final, CBHS batted first after winning the toss and posted a handy 222-8.
Tauranga replied with 56-1 before play was called off.
The selectors then named the squad to attend the Gillette Cup elite coaching clinic in Wellington in February.
They are: Chris Bond, Greg Morgan, Tom Powell (Howick College); Robert Lucas, Steven Rae, Mathew Sadd, Kane Williams (Tauranga BC); Doug Bracewell, Andrew Dodd (Rathkeale College); Phillip Banks, Andrew Horrell, Henry Nuttall (Christchurch BHS).
GOLF
Increased interest in golf at all levels has led to the promotion of an international schools tournament to be played in Christchurch in April 2007.
The inaugural World Schools Golf Challenge is expected to attract entries from the United States, Britain, Europe, Canada, Asia, Australia and South Africa as well as New Zealand.
Teams will comprise four pupils or immediate past pupils aged from 13-19 years.
The tournament, which is expected to attract between 50 and 100 teams (to play in boys, girls and mixed competition), is being organised by Vintage Sports and Leisure , a company headed by long-time New Zealand Open organiser Paul Gleeson.
It will be played at courses in and around Christchurch and will have golfing great Sir Bob Charles as its patron.
TOUCH
Papakura High won a record fourth straight girls' title at the century foundation national secondary schools championship at Napier's Park Island.
Led by senior players Mary Jane Ale and Jodie Tupaea, Papakura beat Christchurch's Rangi Ruru Girls School 4-2 in the final.
The South Auckland school had the chance to claim a rare double when its mixed team made that final by upsetting defending champions Tangaroa College in the semifinals. They went into the final as favourites but could not contain Queen Elizabeth College, who were always in control and won 7-3.
A strong second half carried Hamilton Boys High School to a 5-3 win over Kelston Boys High School in the boys' final.
Kelston took an early lead, but Hamilton hit back to tie the scores in a game that featured many end-to-end attacks. At halftime the scores were locked at 2-2, but with Hamilton gradually taking the initiative.
Led by captain Mita Graham, the Waikato side edged 4-3 ahead and then overcame intense Kelston defence to grab another touchdown and their first national title.
