KEY POINTS:
There are plenty of snow bunnies at Coronet Peak, in Queenstown, despite the skifield itself being closed on the first day of the season.
Marketing Manager David Ovendale says there has been 12 hours of rain overnight, which has melted and waterlogged the snow.
He says that is not good news for skiers and boarders and the mountain is closed for skiing today.
Prior to the bad weather Coronet Peak had a snow base of around 40 to 60 centimetres.
However Mr Ovendale says the base lodge is in full swing with about 200 people enjoying a meal, drinking and relaxing in the warmth while it snows outside.
Forecasters expect the snow to keep falling all day.
