Former track cyclist Simon van Velthooven is trialling for a spot on Team New Zealand's America's Cup boat.
A Cycling New Zealand spokesman confirmed the London 2012 bronze medallist has asked for time away from the sport.
It follows Team New Zealand's testing of its AC 50 catamaran in Auckland, which included cycle pedestals for grinders using leg power.
