Professional cyclist Julian Dean has been named male road rider of the year at the BikeNZ cycling awards in Christchurch.
Dean is one of five riders honoured by the sport's governing body. He had three podium finishes in the Tour de France, and once again raced in all three Grand tours for his Garmin Transitions team.
Commonwealth Games medallists feature heavily with Jesse Sergent voted male track rider of the year, Alison Shanks female track rider of the year, Sam Webster best emerging talent and Linda Villumsen female road rider.
The women's national road championship race takes place at midday with the men's race tomorrow. Defending champion Rushlee Buchanan faces a formidable field in today's race.
Buchanan faces stiff competition from the likes of two-time winner Cath Cheatley and 2003 champion Joanne Kiesanowski.
Buchanan insists there is no pressure though and she just wants to enjoy the race.
The 123km race sees the field complete eight laps starting from Pioneer Stadium, up over the Cashmere Hills and then back through Hoon Hay.
