LECCO, Italy (AP) Joaquin Rodriguez bounced back from a stinging defeat in last weekend's world championships to defend his title in the Il Lombardia single-day classic Sunday.
Rodriguez was headed toward victory last Sunday in Florence when Portuguese rider Rui Costa caught and passed the Spaniard in the finishing straight.
This time, nobody could catch Rodriguez when he attacked on the final climb with about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) to go, just like last year.
The Katusha rider clocked 6 hours, 10 minutes, 18 seconds over the 242-kilometer (150-mile) route from Bergamo to Lecco, along Lake Como.
Alejandro Valverde, a Spaniard with Movistar, finished second, 17 seconds behind, and Rafal Majka, a Pole with Saxo-Tinkoff, crossed third, 23 seconds back.
