In the 80 lap women's points race, 18-year-old Sophie Williamson of Alexandra fought a tight battle with four-time world champion Taylah Jennings of Australia to secure New Zealand's fifth silver medal of the championships.
"Taylah played it to her strengths by waiting for the sprints. I tried to make it a harder race by attacking but nobody else seemed to want to help me. They all seemed pretty happy to let Taylah roll in on the sprints, but I tried my hardest and couldn't do any more," said Williamson.
She offered a series of gutsy attacks on the field of 11 riders, but was closely marshalled by the Australian at every turn and despite not winning an interval sprint, was in the points at all eight check points to be a deserved medallist.
A flurry of attacks from New Zealand cyclist Hamish Schreurs went largely unrewarded in the men's scratch race final as he missed the breakaway and faded to bunch finish in ninth place.
Earlier, Auckland's Paige Paterson advanced to the semifinals of the women's sprint after beating fellow Kiwi and roommate Kate Dunlevey from Southland 2-0 in the best of three quarter-final.
Paterson will go head to head with Caitlin Ward of Australia tonight for a place in the gold medal race. American Jennifer Valente and Daria Shmeleva of Russia will compete in the other semifinal.
Dunlevey finished the championships in sixth place, followed by her Cantabrian teammate Victoria Steel in seventh.
After three events of the six-leg men's omnium, Canterbury's Tayla Harrison is sitting in eighth place.
The championships continue until Sunday.
