Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert has revealed he finished stage 16 of the Tour de France with a broken kneecap - and he even has the pictures to prove it.
Gilbert was leading yesterday's stage when he hit the wall - literally.
He crashed earlier in the stage while descending fromthe Col de Portet-d'Aspet, hitting a wall and flipping off his bike spectacularly but avoiding major injury.
It was the same descent where Italian rider Fabio Casartelli died during the 1995 Tour.
He withdrew from the race at the end of the stage - after riding with a serious injury.
Thank you all for the support after yesterday’s crash. I have done everything I could to continue in @LeTour, but unfortunately it’s not longer possible with a fracture of the patella. As always I will come back stonger! #TourDePhil#TDF2018pic.twitter.com/FVobfmxhfz
Unfortunately, @PhilippeGilbert won't start tomorrow. Thanks for ride, congratulations for your courage, Philippe! 💛 Malheureusement, Philippe Gilbert ne prendra pas le départ demain. Merci pour tout et bon rétablissement, Philippe ! 💛#TDF2018pic.twitter.com/QHfrak79C8
