NZ individual pursuit cyclist Alison Shanks finished an encouraging ninth on the opening day of the world track cycling championships in Bordeaux, France.
Shanks' time of 3m 44.82s was impressive, particularly for somebody involved in the sport for less than a year. The other New Zealander in action was Tim Gudsell, who was 16th in the final of the men's points race.
