KEY POINTS:
New Zealand cyclist Hayden Roulston continued his solid showing in the Tour of California, finishing well in yesterday's 186km second stage from Sausalito to Santa Cruz.
Levi Leipheimer, gunning for his third Tour of California title, moved into the overall lead with a second-place finish in the stage won by compatriot Thomas Peterson.
Roulston, riding for the newly founded Cervelo Test team, was in a group 1m 52s down on Peterson's winning 5h 6m 20s in 36th place.
Roulston is 28th overall on the general classification in the eight-stage tour, 6m 3s down on Leipheimer and on the same time as top Spanish sprinter Oscar Freire (Rabobank).
Roulston is also one second ahead of American Floyd Landis, who won the 2006 Tour de France, but tested positive for synthetic testosterone and was stripped of the title. The Tour of California is Landis' first race back from a two-year doping ban.
Of the other New Zealanders contesting the nine-day tour, Jeremy Vennell (Bissell Pro Cycling) is the best placed at 42nd on general classification, 9m 03s down on Leipheimer, after finishing 49th in stage two.
Beijing Olympian Glen Chadwick (Rock Racing) finished over 11 minutes down on the winner yesterday, placing 75th with fellow New Zealander Peter Latham (Bissell Pro Cycling) 99th in the stage, 17m 10s down.
