KEY POINTS:
National cycling star Hayden Roulston is in Christchurch Hospital with what is believed to be serious injuries following an incident while training in Christchurch today.
BikeNZ high performance manager Michael Flynn told NZPA today that details were sketchy at the moment, "but it doesn't look good".
"I'm waiting for more information but it looks serious enough to put him out of the national road race in Upper Hutt on Saturday," Flynn said.
Christchurch Hospital sources told NZPA Roulston was in the emergency department but were unable to release details of his injuries.
Roulston is the defending national road champion and his duel on Saturday with international cycling star Julian Dean was highly anticipated.
Roulston, who appeared to have overcome a career-threatening heart malfunction, was also due to lead an eight-strong New Zealand team to South Australia's Tour Down Under next week after the nationals.
