New Zealand has won gold and silver medals on the opening night of finals at the track cycling World Cup meet in Melbourne.
Jesse Sergent won the men's Individual pursuit but world champion Alison Shanks had to settle for silver in the women's event.
Sergent proved too classy for Australian Rohan Dennis in the men's race but Shanks was edged out by Olympic silver medallist Britain's Wendy Houvenaghel, reversing their close result from the world championships in Poland earlier this year.
Joanne Kiesanowski, the country's leading road rider in recent years, finished fourth in the women's scratch race and 19-year-old Tom Scully finished eighth in the points race.
