Canterbury cyclist Hayden Roulston held a slender lead over his provincial and national track squad team-mate Hayden Godfrey after the second stage of the Tour de Vineyards near Nelson yesterday.
Roulston and Godfrey were both in a leading bunch of four riders nearing the end of the 100km return stage from Richmond to the Reay Saddle.
Although Godfrey won the sprint, in 2h 3min 30s, Roulston's second placing in the same time was just enough for him to hold on to the tour leader's jersey.
Jason Allen, of Canterbury, and Marlborough's Robin Reid finished third and fourth respectively, also in 2h 3min 30s.
United States-based professional Susy Pryde leads the women's race after two stages by 1min 22s.
Today's stage is a gruelling 115km from Richmond to the top of the Takaka Hill.
